Before sharing the best things to do in Ljubljana, it is important to understand why you should visit this sustainable capital.

Ljubljana is not just Slovenia's capital, it is a European leader in sustainability and livability. The proud winner of the European Green Capital Award in 2016, because it has transformed into an eco-conscious destination while preserving its historical charm.

With 542 m2 of public green space per resident (the highest in Europe), 75% waste recycling rates, and a car-free city center since 2007, Ljubljana demonstrates that urban environments can thrive sustainably.

The water quality ranks among the top in the EU. Also, 95% of residents live within 300 meters of public green spaces. After this, I'm delighted to share the magic of Ljubljana with travelers seeking an authentic experience.

Desired things to do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana may be one of Europe's smallest capitals, but it packs an impressive cultural punch. These three landmarks must be at the top of your list:

Ljubljana Castle

The nobility of medieval architecture goes hand in hand with the art of contemporary architecture. Its construction began in the 11th century, but it was renovated in the 12th century. The Viewing Tower was originally built of wood, but years and misfortunes later, it was replaced with a stone tower. Now the castle is open for everyone, from here you can enjoy the panoramic views and the houses.

Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)

Designed by the beloved architect Jože Plečnik, this unique set of three bridges crossing the Ljubljanica River is the core of the city. The best time to visit is during the summer. Locals, visitors, and merchants enjoy a good coffee and street performers throughout the evenings.

Tivoli Park

The largest green space encompasses over 5 m2 of well-groomed gardens, forest trails, and cultural institutions. Summer picnics and winter walks, Tivoli Park is a scene full of locals who go there year-round for relaxation.

Things to do in Ljubljana that only locals know

To experience Ljubljana like a true local, venture beyond the most popular to these lesser-known treasures:

Krakovo District

This neighborhood is simply charming. Preserves Ljubljana's agricultural past with its urban gardens. Walking through its narrow streets lined with traditional houses reveals a lifestyle that has been preserved for centuries. It's like stepping back in time.

Šiška Cultural Quarter

A suburb of the capital that has become, over time, an iconic spot in central Ljubljana. Šiška represents the fusion of local pride with urban openness. It's also a place with a dual personality. On one side, there's an indie music concert for young people, and on the other, older people playing chess. Kino Šiška is a must for concerts and art exhibitions featuring both established and emerging talent.

Ljubljanica River Banks at Špica

A ten-minute walk from the historical centre of Ljubljana brings you to the new side of the capital. A dock converted into a garden. This is where locals and travelers alike enjoy the river, the weather, the sunny afternoons, and, of course, the ochre-tinged autumn.

Seasonal Dining Experiences

Things to do in Ljubljana include a stroll through its local and seasonal flavors. Ljubljana's culinary scene emphasizes locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. These restaurants delight both locals and visitors:

  • Gostilna AS: This upscale restaurant in Ljubljana's old town celebrates Slovenian cuisine with modern twists. The menu is never the same and is constantly changing. The flavors and ingredients are seasonal. Homemade bread and Malvasia wine are the perfect way to whet your appetite. A glass of wine won't be enough.
  • TaBar: This restaurant is available by reservation only. This wine bar serves traditional Slovenian small plates (similar to tapas) using seasonal ingredients. Their buckwheat štruklji with cottage cheese and walnuts is a must-try in autumn.
